The MarketPlace•Shop showcase the wares of enterprising artisans from all over South Africa who create wonderful unique handmade products. On our travels around the country sourcing products that we are proud to showcase on our website, we visit many quaint and charming villages that are perfect getaway destinations for affordable family holidays.

We’ve found a few places along the way that we highly recommend for weekend getaways, ranging from romantic breakaways for couples to off-the-grid camping trips and weekends away with kids. One region that we love to visit is the Little Karoo and you’ll find on The MarketPlace•Shop a selection of budget breakaway destinations that we know you’ll love.

More about the Little Karoo

Also known as the Klein Karoo, this unique and picturesque region is located in the Western Cape. The Little Karoo falls within the famous Garden Route and stretches along a beautiful section of the magical Cape Route 62. This famous scenic route extends from Barrydale in the west to De Rust in the east, and links Cape Town to the major tourist destinations in the Garden Route. It ends at Port Elizabeth on the east coast of South Africa.

Cape Route 62 is renowned for its breathtaking beauty with towering mountain ranges, vast fertile valleys and stunning rugged coastline. Route 62 is similar to the world-famous Route 66 that connects the urban and rural communities between Chicago and Los Angeles, but with more of an emphasis on food and wine destinations.

Cape Route 62 passes through lush farming towns such as Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Amalienstein, Zoar and the fruit-growing and wine-producing towns of Barrydale, Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale, Robertson, McGregor, Rawsonville, Worcester, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Wellington and Paarl. It includes the Langkloof region where you’ll find Misgund, Louterwater, Krakeel, Joubertina and Kareedouw.

One of the most popular towns in the Little Karoo is Oudtshoorn which is affectionately known as the “Ostrich Capital of the World” because of its thriving ostrich farming enterprises. The main attraction in Oudtshoorn is the 20-million year-old Cango Caves which is located in Precambrian limestones at the foothills of the dramatic Swartberg Pass. It consists of a series of hidden chambers cut deep into the thick limestone rock layer.

Ladismith is another popular place to visit in the Western Cape. It lies in the foot of the Klein Swartberg mountain range and is known for the intriguing Towerkop which looms above the town. The historic town was established in 1852 and today, supports an extensive tropical fruit farming industry as well as well-known wineries and cheese-making factories.

Little Karoo lies at the end of what is known as the “longest wine route in the world” which runs from the historic wine-farming towns on Constantia, Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek on the outskirts of Cape Town to the wine-growing regions of the Little Karoo which lie nestled in the long valleys below the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges.

The dry, arid climate of the Little Karoo create excellent conditions for flourishing vineyards, especially those producing a fine range of dessert, fortified wines and pot-stilled brandies. There are 21 wine estates in the Little Karoo, with the most popular found in Barrydale, De Rust and Calitzdorp.

The tranquil seaside towns of the Garden Route are great for weekend family holidays and also ideal as a base from which to explore the Little Karoo. The region is renowned for its striking scenic beauty, gorgeous beaches, incredibly diverse wilderness areas and a host of exciting outdoor activities which draw hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers to the region every year.
